Firm expectations for UK beef and sheep prices

YET another global prospects report indicates beef and sheep prices are likely to remain firm in 2012.

Demand from the emerging economies is helping to support the market, according to the latest International Meat Market Review, published by AHDB’s market intelligence division for Eblex and Bpex.

On beef, the report says all major producing countries saw prices increase last year to levels well ahead of 2010. It is likely prices will prevail through 2012, alongside some modest recovery in production volumes of beef and veal.

It is much the same with lamb – tight supplies set against rising demand in emerging economies.

“Prices should remain firm in 2012, if not quite reaching the heights recorded at some points in 2011,” said AHDB senior analyst Debbie Butcher.

Not surprisingly, as a result of this optimistic outlook, there should be some re-building of the global sheep flock.

UK becomes net exporter of lamb

The UK has become a net exporter of lamb for the first time in at least 50 years, according to new data from industry levy-funded body EBLEX.

Sheep meat exports from the UK in 2011 were 11% up on the previous year, totalling 98,500 tonnes product weight, while UK sheep meat imports fell 13% to 88,000 tonnes product weight.

The rise in exports was mainly driven by very strong demand on the continent with a number of EU member states increasingly looking to the UK. Exports to France accounted for 60% with an increase of 3.1% by volume, while shipments to Germany and Ireland both increased by around two thirds year-on-year.

Fun was had by all during the Weddel Swift Christmas party, this year hosted at Aintree Race course the home of the Grand National. The theme of the night was ‘Midnight in Monte Carlo’, so dinner suits and elegant dresses were the order of the day.

A free bar, good food and excellent entertainment all contributed to a wonderful night and in celebration of the party we decided to get a picture of the whole team in full party spirit.

It’s surprising when you delve through your drawers what you find! – lost photographs

During the heady Spring of 1990, while the rest of the country was dancing to New Kids on the Block and rapping with John Barnes and New Order, Weddel Swift trader Iain Scott and the rest of the team at the Preston Depot (now merged with Rochdale) took it upon themselves to help a local charity for handicapped children.

It was the annual River Ribble Raft Race on the spring bank holiday where lots of homemade rafts raced from Ribchester to the mouth of the Ribble – which was some  14 Miles. The boys spent  6 weeks building the raft from old meat pallets and plastic drums and were very proud of the finished article. On the day they were able to use the Swift wagon for transport to the start.

Unfortunately they only managed to get about 500 metres down the river before the drums came away from the pallets and unfortunately the raft sank, soaking wet; but with the help of New Zealand Lamb we managed to raise a sum of £314 for the charity.

Mark Murphy, logistics manager at Weddel Swift Liverpool has being raising money for the Marie Curie Centre in Liverpool by making crisps, chocolates and soft drinks available for staff in the office.

Mark also uses some of the cash to help fund a local Sunday league side Garston F.C, currently riding high in the Liverpool Sunday League premier division.

The latest donation has just been acknowledged by Marie Curie and the amount raised in the first year so far has been £550. Not a bad effort from the 22 staff working at our Liverpool office. Thanks to all involved and may their diets remain on hold for a little longer!

Rooting through the dusty storerooms at the back of the Weddel Swift offices a treasure was unearthed this week. Hiding beneath long forgotten documents and unused stationery was the old Weddel and Co. GMBH sign. The solid brass sign had, in another life, elegantly adorned the entrance to the Weddel & Co. offices in Hamburg founded in the early part of the 20th century.

The brass plate was obviously in a state of disrepair after many years of neglect, but a tin of basso and a day’s hard labour brought it back to it’s former glory. Now we just have to work out where to put it.

 

 

Weddel Swift’s very own ovine guru Terry Barham has made the local news this week landing a hole in one during a round at Hurlson Hall Golf Club on December the 10th. Terry has been a member of the Golf Club since 1997 and this was his first hole in one.

Delighted, he said he’d “blobbed the first two holes and was falling behind my arch rival Tom Houghton, the ace brought me back into contention and enabled me to overhaul him on the 18th green”

Terry now hopes to continue this rich vein of form into the Weddel Swift Company Golf day scheduled for later this year.

Congratulations are in order for Nigel Hofmann, owner of traditional Wakefield butchery Hofmann’s, as they have been crowned ‘Meat Trade Journals Champion of Champions’ in the UK top sausage making competition. The Annual championship pitches the best, award winning sausages across the UK against each other in a fight to the finish. The winning recipe was Hofmann’s traditional pork sausage praised by the judges for is consistently strong performance throughout the competition. Nigel has been a long standing customer of Weddel Swift placing his first orders with the company over 20 years ago.

 

With our well established ability in cold chain management and frozen distribution, Weddel Swift have linked in with a prestigious Indian company importing frozen mango retail packs. Although traditionally a meat only company, in recent years we have grown into other non-traditional markets, mango being the latest. The mango will be imported frozen in 1kg retail packs, and will be marketed to the food service and retail customers.
